How to Buy a Used BMW Motorcycle
In what was first began as an airplane engine manufacturer, the BMW Corporation shifted towards producing motorcycles right after World War I. A storied company in every sense of the word, the BMW launched its first R32 in 1923 and have been riding past the competition ever since. From the sleek K series BMW motorcycles to the tough R series, each series has its own unique qualities. With that said, it makes sense to show common sense when purchasing a used BMW motorcycle.
With replacement parts for used BMW motorcycles more expensive than ever, it is important to inspect your used BMW motorcycle with the eyes and claws of a hawk. One of the single most important things to assess first is the state of your BMW’s tires. Check for wear and tear by checking for uneven wear and cupping of the tread. This is a surefire sign that your used BMW motorcycle has had poor air pressures added to the tires. The sidewall should also be checked for cracks. These are hard to detect so make sure to use a flashlight to inspect the side of the tire. Sometimes, cracks might not be seen on tires until you add the right air pressure to them.
Immediately after tire inspection of your used BMW motorcycle should be a check of the wheels. Spin the wheels a good hundred times to check for straightness. Take the wheel and move it from side to side. Here, too much movement means it’s defective. Worn wheel bearings may be responsible for side to side movement. In addition, press the brake tightly, release, and spin the wheel again to assess its free movement. If they stall in any way or move slower than before, there is a problem.
Secondly, note the integrity of your used BMW motorcycle by paying attention to the front fender. Check to see if it is mounted tightly and well bolted to the lower fork slider. Inspect all bolts closely to see if they have been damaged in the past. Since many fenders are made of plastic, check for cracks as well. Cracked fenders are a sign that previous repairs have not been up to par. Also, check your used BMW motorcycle’s handlebars to see if they are bent. Often times, you will see different BMW bikes with varying handlebar styles. Older BMW bikes have one piece handlebar while later styles have two. With newer style handlebars, you pay more so check accordingly.
